“Before the Stage Lights Come On”
Making the decision to compete in a figure or fitness competition can be exciting yet intimidating at the same time. How do you get started? How do you know which division to compete in? What federation to compete in? Do you have the right body type? What should your meal plan consist of? All of these questions may flood your mind and leave you confused. Although these are questions you should ask, there is one important topic we should address before these questions are answered. That topic is “Self-Esteem”. Making the decision to step on stage in front of critical fans and a panel of judges has the potential to shake your confidence. Fitness and figure competitions are not judged according to mainstream sports such as basketball or football. This sport is not based on a determined point or time system. You may ask yourself, “How are you judged?” It’s an old cliché, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder in this sport. Without defined objectives and points systems, it may become challenging to determine what the judges are looking for. Before you put on your two-piece suit make sure you are internally ready for this experience. How can you compete in this sport and not allow your placing to affect yourself esteem?
1. Compete for yourself and no one else: It takes time, consistency, dedication and perseverance to get into optimal condition to step on stage. If you are training for someone else your passion will burn out quickly. Make the decision to compete as a sense of accomplishment for yourself.
2. Do not compare yourself to other competitors: You are an individual with different genetic potential. Do not waste your time comparing yourself to someone else. Train your mind and body to be the best version of you.
3. Do not place your self worth in a trophy: Everyone has the desire to compete and place well. You train for months and sacrifice time with family and friends and you desire to show off your hard earned results. It is a great feeling to place well and reap the benefits of your labor. With that being said, if you do not make the top 5 do not allow your worth to be attached to a trophy or placement. Making the decision to step on stage is a hug accomplishment within it’s self. Be proud of yourself regardless of where you place. Speak with the judges and discover your areas of improvement. Move forward and work on those improvements.
4. Take one show at a time: Set realistic, yet challenging short-term and long-term goals. Don’t become bogged down with to many shows at one time. Enjoy the process. Once you step on stage all the dieting and training is over. Smile and own the stage, it belongs to you.
Once you compete you will discover traits about yourself (determination, dedication, consistency) that will carry over to all areas of your life. Confidence isn’t something you leave on the stage; it is something you will carry for the rest of your life. As you take this new endeavor take time to encourage other women in your life to join you with your training, maybe they too will get bite by the fitness bug. Remember you are fearfully and wonderfully made, there is no other woman on the planet that is just like you. Embrace your uniqueness and show the world who you are!
